Remove your star trace another line 1/4 inch inside the star, this will be the sewing line. Brian i would make a star, then press it onto a piece of piece of freezer paper (the waxy side will help hold it steady.) trace the shape of the star.

I'm convinced it has to do with the measurements for the triangles and squares.
